Also known as occipitotemporal gyrus, the fusiform gyrus is located between the inferior temporal gyrus and parahippocampal gyrus, on the inferior surface of each cerebral hemisphere. It is situated in Brodmann Area 37. Among the functions performed by the fusiform gyrus include: face and body recognition, number recognition, processing of color information, etc. Research has also shown the fusiform face area, the area within the fusiform gyrus, is heavily involved in face perception but only to any generic within-category identification which is shown to be one of the functions of the fusiform gyrus.
