Keratinization

Thursday, November 8, 2012

Keratinization is the accumulation of keratin in epithelial cells, causing them to get hard and horny to form finger nails and hair. Keratin is a type of protein abundant in epithelial cells of epidermis. When the cells in the outer surface of the skin get keratinized, they become squamules and form the cornified layers of the skin.
