Barium is a whitish malleable, metallic element. It is divalent, occurring in combination chiefly as barite and witherite. Symbol Ba; atomic weight 137.34; atomic number 56; valence 2. Barium has a boiling point of 1,140ยบ. It is used in alloys with nickel and was used in vacuum tubes.
