Heptabarbital is a barbiturate drug formerly used as a sedative or hypnotic. In the United States it was sold under the brand name of Medomin. Heptabarbital is a cycloheptenylethyl barbituric acid. It differes from other clinically barbiturates in that a 7-member ring is introduced into the barbiturate radical. In low dosage, it has a mild sedative action; in larger doses, it produces a hypnotic action of medium duration. Sleeps usually lasts throughout the night. The drug was not supposed to be administered to patients with severe respiratory or ciculatory depression or to those with a known sensitivity to barbiturates.
