Reserpine is a pure crystalline alkaloid obtained from the root of the plant Rauwolfia serpentina. Since it reduces arterial blood pressure and has a sedative effects, it is use in the treatment of hypertension with related emotional disturbance. Reserpine is characterized by slow onset of action and sustained effect. Both its cardiovascular and central nervous system effects may persist following withdrawal of the drug.
