Methoxyflurane is an inhalation agent which provides anesthesia and analgesia. It vaporizes approximately ten times more rapidly than water on an equal weight basis, even though the vapor pressures and boiling points are similar. Following surgical anesthesia, analgesia and drowsiness may persist after consciousness has returned. Sold under the trade name of Penthrane, methoxyflurane is 2.2-dichloro-1.1-difluoroethyl-methyl ether.
