Hemopericardium is an accumulation of blood in between the two layers of the pericardium and is usually caused by necrosis of the heart muscle and in patients that are treated with anticoagulants. Similar to a pericardial effusion, hemopericardium can cause a pericardial tamponade if the volume of blood accumulated is big enough to exert pressure on the heart.
