Superior Gluteal Artery

The superior gluteal artery originates from the internal iliac artery as its largest branch. Running backward between the lumbosacral trunk and the first sacral nerve, the superior gluteal artery leaves the pelvis through the suprapiriform part of the greater sciatic foramen to supply the gluteal muscles. It divides into several branches which anastomoses with inferior gluteal artery.
