Acyclovir is anti-viral drug used in the treatment of viral infections, such as encephalitis, varicella zoster, herpes, and other viral diseases. Chemically, acyclovir is a synthetic purine nucleoside, which was first produced in the early 1980s by Gertrude B Elion. It has a bioavailability of 20% and a renal excretion.
