Carbamazepine is an iminostilben derivative used in the treatment of the pain associated with true trigeminal neuralgia. It is also employed as an anticonvulsant, in the therapy of certain types of epilepsy. It is a white crystalline compound which is insoluble in water but soluble in propylene glycol. Carbamazepine was formerly sold under the brand name of Tegretol.

Caution: treatment with carbamazepine can cause aplastic anemia and agranulocytosis.
